Created in 1987 by Dominique Massoubre, theFerme conservatoire de Leyssart” is dedicated to the rearing and study of rare breeds often threatened with extinction: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry. Nearly all types of domestic breeds are represented. They are grown in extensive pastures. The idea is not so much to establish a collection of breeds but on the contrary, those farmers have always tried to do in-depth work for every type of animals they have. Each breed is the subject of a study (research, contacts with previous owners, observations of each generation, observation of behaviors and needs, rediscovery of original characteristics). Emphasis is also placed on the nutritional quality of the grazed pasture which means a focus its botanical composition. The farm with its various flocks and herds preserves genetic diversity and insures that “less productive” breeds keep a key place in a type of agriculture that respects the laws of nature.

Stock breeding: the farm welcomes anyone interested to get to know more about animalbreeder job, from a first and short discovery of the job aspects to a in-depth traininglasting a few months.
Complementary activities are proposed as well: gardening, wood cutting, renovation and construction projects etc.
